Skilled Laborer

Description of Job Duties::

This position is responsible for project related activities such as directed by a supervisor to include: setting up job materials, coordinating and maintaining trucking lanes, loading & unloading supplies, repairing silt fencing, dewatering job sites, safety monitoring, directing equipment operators, traffic and trucking, maintaining paperwork collected for daily, maintaining truck data, load times and counts.

Other duties include::

  • Operate jackhammers and drills to break up concrete or pavement.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute
    them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools,
    machinery, and equipment, to include lubrication and cleaning machinery,
    equipment, and tools.
  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to
    grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps,
    and other temporary structures.
  • Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where
    construction work will be performed.
  • Raze buildings and salvage useful materials.
  • Provide assistance to Operators and Foremen as needed.

Conditions of Employment:

This position is required to arrive on the job timely to obtain instructions for work flow and daily work plans. There will be time for lunch but because of truck loading times and traffic flow, lunch and breaks will be when possible rather than at establish times (taken during slow time). Job will require bending, standing, kneeling, walking, lifting up to 50lbs, stretching arms overhead, waving flags, holding signs, and operating small tools and equipment. This position reports to the foreman or job supervisor. Job hours may be subject to change with each job but will be dictated by contract and the general contractor onsite.

Working Environment:

Each construction job site may be different but generally consists of outside activities to include temperature fluctuations from frigid to extremely hot, windy, dry and dusty. During inclement weather such as rain or snow, the job sites will close for safety
reasons. Other environmental issues may include loud noises, traffic, and burning fuel smells. The terrain will generally be in all dirt which may include uneven surfaces.
